What is a Driving Experience?
A driving experience is where you can drive a car of your choice around a racing track at high speed with an instructor at your side. You can choose from a variety of luxury cars, muscle cars, sports cars, racing cars and many more. This experience is totally personal to you, so you can pick whichever car you fancy!
I went on a driving experience and picked the Ferrari 348 ts to race at high speed around a track in the UK for 4 laps. The 1989 Ferrari ts was left-hand drive and didn’t have powered steering, so make sure you check the features of the car before you book.
What happens on the day?
When you arrive at your chosen track, you may have to sign in before your time slot to let the company know you are there. You then most likely will have to attend a talk by the driving instructors on the rules and regulations. Once you have listened to this, you will be led to the track where you await your turn to drive your chosen car.
How much does a driving experience cost?
Driving experiences can cost anything from £100 to £200 depending on which car you book, the time of year and your decisions on the day. The driving instructor will ask you if you want to go around the track for more than the purchased laps which you can do so at additional cost. So, bear in mind it can cost you more money. Other extra costs could include hot laps in a racing car at the side of a racing driver, a sightseeing lap to look at the track before your lap and you can also pay to go in other styles of cars.
As you can see in the picture, I was in the Ferrari 348 ts and I went around the track 4 times as well as deciding to purchase pictures from the day.
What if I crash the car?
Don’t panic! Most companies who provide these experiences give you the option to pay a small insurance fee to cover you if you crash the car. This is another small, extra cost but does give you the assurance that you are covered.
How old do you have to be?
As long as you can drive, it doesn’t matter what age you are! Some driving experience companies let children as young as 12 and 14-year-olds drive as long as they are safe and have practised beforehand. This also means you don’t have to have a driving licence to take part too.
Where do you book a driving experience?
The events are usually held at racing courses and there are quite a few across the UK to choose from. I booked my experience through Red Letter Days events online and was able to pick from a variety of locations. You can choose one at a track near you!
Does it last the whole day?
The driving experience I went on lasted 4 hours, but you can stay for much longer if you want to pay for more laps or take photos of the luxury sports cars being driven around the track.
So, why try a driving experience?
The whole experience itself is very thrilling and the adrenaline from driving a very expensive and fast sports car is something not to be missed. Driving a left-hand drive, classic Ferrari with no powered steering is something I’ve always wanted to do. I received this experience as a gift but you can book your experience online. Both petrol cars and diesel cars are up against the fight with the recent global warming and emissions records so they may not be around forever.
Are there electric cars?
Electric cars are on the rise! Some companies do offer the experience of driving a high powered electric car such as the BMW I8 or new hybrid cars so have a look online to see if you can find one.
